Creativity - A Key Benefit of Cooking

A resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Phillip “Phil” Kwilose is the general manager of Five Star Home Improvement, LLC, in Iowa City, Iowa. Outside his work, Phil Kwilose enjoys hobbies that include cooking.

Cooking has a host of advantages, but one of its little-known benefits is that it sparks creativity, which can improve a person’s mood. Creativity in cooking may be expressed by experimenting with recipes, swapping ingredients to bring out certain flavors, and even creating entirely new dishes. Those who have cooked for a long time begin to take the knowledge they have and apply it to create new food pairings or find new techniques (such as grilling a turkey) to prepare flavorful dishes.

Some researchers say that cooking is akin to creative activities such as writing and painting in that it facilitates relaxation. When a person focuses on cooking, the activity shifts the mind away from current problems. Moreover, cooking can promote a sense of control and empowerment that contributes to a more positive attitude.
